Things I still find surprising

In economics it can be easy to get so caught up in the data and your analysis that you don’t stop and really look at it. I just did, and it blew my mind. In the sample of men from rural Malawi that I’m currently using, the average person is living off of 166 Kwacha per day. Adjusted for purchasing power that’s $3 for an entire household. The median is even worse, at $1.80. That’s substantially less than what I spend on a single meal.

These people are very poor.
